VINEYARD: The fruit comes from our clay rich hillside Raupo Creek vineyard and the alluvial shingles of our Tatou vineyard. Each vine is thinned to carry one bunch per shoot.
CLONES: 115, 777, 5, 667"90 points. Fermented with wild yeast and aged for 15 months in French barriques, 35% new, the 2009 Rachel Pinot Noir casts a medium ruby-purple color and gives notes of fresh blackberries and black cherries with an undercurrent of black truffles, loam and forest floor plus a hint of menthol. Full bodied and generously fruited in the mouth, it is well structured with a medium level of tight-knit, grainy tannins and crisp acidity. The finish is long and earthy. Drink this one now to 2016+." Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate, October 2011WINEMAKER'S NOTES: The nose exhibits aromas of black cherry, truffle and dark chocolate. The palate is concentrated and full with savoury, spicy herbal notes and underlying fruit power. The tannins are fine and mouth-coating tannins and the finish persistent.
CELLARING POTENTIAL: This wine is delicate yet powerful, and has the potential to improve over the next five to ten years.VINIFICATION: After hand-picking the fruit was hand-sorted before being de-stemmed and cooled. After a pre-fermentation soaking period the juice was allowed to warm and fermentation started with wild yeast. During fermentation the caps were hand-plunged daily. The wine was then left to sit on skins for two weeks for post ferment maceration; a total of four weeks was spent in contact with the skins. It was then drained and lightly pressed before being transferred to French barriques, approximately 30% of which were new. The Rachel Pinot Noir went through natural malolactic fermentation during fifteen months spent maturing in barrel, before being bottled unfiltered and without fining. The finished wine has an alcohol of 14.0 percent, pH of 3.65, and 5.90g/L titratable acid. |
