HISTORY

Viticulture and winemaking in the Valpolicella region dates back to the Bronze Age. Prior to the arrival of the Romans in 200 BC, wine was produced by local peasants for their own consumption. The Romans cut the landscape into a series of fields, many dedicated to vines, which helped trigger the birth of commercial viticulture. In 1855, the first Italian school of winemaking was established in the region.

The Marchesi Fumanelli family has been making wine in Valpolicella since the 15th century. The villa and surrounding grounds retain many archeological remains dating back to the Roman period including the vestiges of a temple dedicated to the goddess Flora. In 1998, the family restored the ancient cellars and returned the wooden barrels to their original location.
