2010 GIGONDAS - VIN RARE

INTRODUCTION

Gigondas was the first cru that opened its doors to us in 2004. We are thus particularly attached to this terroir and the people that welcomed us at a time when we had yet to prove ourselves.

VINEYARD PROFILE

There are 3 core vineyard partners for our Gigondas. One of these partners has been with François and Jean-François since the beginning of the company with his Gigondas, part of our Cotes du Rhône and a Cotes du Rhône Villages. Dauvergne Ranvier is well known in this appellation.

The vines are on the higher part of the slopes dominating the Villages, below the famous “Dentelles de Montmirail” (a natural small mountain chain, highest point is about 750 meters, and considered the first “foot” of the Alpes in the Rhone Valley). Soil is rocks on a clay soil dating back to the Jurassic Era.

The soils Jean-François decided to work with there are white & yellow limestone, mixed with small stones. These are quite “stony” vineyards.

Being North oriented, the soils and vines do not suffer much from the heat.

D R works on the same kind of terroir as one of the most famous domaines of the appellation, Domaine St Cosme. The vineyards are mostly Grenache, some very old vines around 65 years old, with Syrah, Cinsault and Mourvèdre varietals.

TASTING NOTES

The color is dark red with slightly brown reflections. The nose has an incredible volubility that speaks openly of Provence. All of the aromas of the south and of the sun intermingle: pine, rosemary, thyme, small red fruits… Then comes a round of spices and subtle woody notes. The palate opens with a supple, ripe attack and then gains in power to finish on a note…that never ends.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

The blend brings together Grenache (80%), Syrah (10%), Cinsault and Mourvèdre (10%). We had fun with this wine for the maturation, playing with a mix of 1/3 cement tanks, 1/3 tuns and 1/3 burgundian barrels.
