2009 was our first vintage on the St. Joseph appellation. We worked with three different producers. Part of the production comes from granite-rich land in the village of Arras and some comes from the yellow granite in Glun. Just under one third of the production was aged in new barrels some in old barrels. The appellation of Saint Joseph runs across a slender area of land measuring 50 kilometres between Chavanay in the north, to Guilherand in the south. The soil is varied with light gneiss or granite shale. Primarily south south-east facing. The name Saint Joseph was given to this region by the Jesuits of Tournon in the XVIIIth Century. It was between 1956 and 1969 that all of the vineyards in this area of the Côtes du Rhône were regrouped and given the A.O.C. Saint-Joseph appellation. Currently the appellation covers more than 1100 ha, and produces close to 40,000 hl, with an average return of: 36 hl/ha.Colour: very dark red with ruby reflections Nose: very dense with summer fruits, aniseed and violet. Palate: marked tannins when young. With age these fade away and lead to a very full-bodied wine. The aftertaste is pure and fresh. The Syrah is grown on the southern slopes where the granite is (near Sarras), not on the plateau that is predominately clay. Granite soils give the wine more lift and better texture in the mouth.100% Syrah. Fermentation: All destemmed fruit, no whole cluster Aged in French Oak of which 30% is new |
