2009 Bacio Divino Vagabond add to summary
92 points. By Bacio Divino. Big, bold and outgoing with lots of Syrah spice and a clear bent to ripeness, this fleshy, very full-bodied effort counts richness rather than finesse as its principal gift. Enriched with lavish oak at every stop, it makes up in mouthfilling flavor and muscle for what it might lack in nuance, and it is so very deep that we can only believe that, given four or five years in bottle, it will find increased complexity and become every bit as interesting as it is generous.

91 points. A nice interpretation of Syrah, this shows fine Napa elegance and structure. Dry and complex, this 100% Syrah has flavors of ripe, crushed blackberry fruit, raw beef, iron and black pepper, with a touch of smoky oak. Try now with beef tartare or carpaccio for something different.

2008 Bacio Divino Bacio Divino add to summary
90 points. (a cabernet-based blend): Ruby-red. Pungent aromas and flavors of black cherry, sassafras, licorice pastille and flowers. Velvety-rich and a bit heavily extracted but lively and not at all dry, with hints of cedar and herbs lending complexity to the mid-palate. Finishes with big, broad but even tannins and a strong element of chocolatey torrefaction.

2008 Bacio Divino Bacio Divino add to summary
92 points. The 2008 Bacio Divino Proprietary Red, which is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon in addition to small quantities of Sangiovese, Petite Sirah and Merlot, plays it closer to the vest than the exuberant, full-throttle 2007 did last year. Notes of high-class cigar tobacco, Christmas fruitcake, black cherry and black currant notes intermixed with spice box and earth jump from the glass of this medium to full-bodied yet still lightly tannic wine. It has excellent density and relatively sweet tannins but needs good aeration before its personality emerges. Bacio Divino’s proprietor, Claus Janzen, continues to turn out one of the best values in Napa.

2008 Bacio Divino Pazzo add to summary
89 points. (a multi-variety blend based on sangiovese): Dark red with ruby highlights. Aromas and flavors of black cherry, bitter chocolate and espresso are lifted by notes of fresh herbs, spices and violet. Nicely concentrated and chewy; seems a bit extracted but there's enough sweetness of fruit and energy for balance. Finishes with ripe, building tannins and a repeating note of chocolate.

90 points. The sexy, seductive 2008 Pazzo, a provocative blend of Sangiovese and other grapes. Always spicy, slightly herbal, but with loads of red and black fruits, the wine is delicious, savory, and a lot of fun to drink. It is best consumed in its first several years of life. Bacio Divino’s proprietor, Claus Janzen, continues to turn out one of the best values in Napa.

2008 Bacio Divino Vagabond add to summary
92 points. The 2008 Vagabond Syrah exhibits a dense purple color along with notes of tar, camphor, and smoky barbecued meats. With its wonderfully dense, rich, full-bodied flavors and loads of fruit and opulence, it should drink well for 4-5 years. Bacio Divino’s proprietor, Claus Janzen, continues to turn out one of the best values in Napa.

2008 Bacio Divino Vagabond Arrighi Vineyard Petite Sirah add to summary
91+ points. A longer term prospect is the 2008 Vagabond Petite Sirah. This wine has plenty of minerals as well as a hint of violets, a thick opaque purpule color, huge tannins, but also massive fruit and concentration. It is a wine to forget for 5years and drink over the next two decades.

94 points. Perhaps the finest example I have ever tasted of the flagship offering, the 2007 Bacio Divino (Cabernet Sauvignon and small quantities of Sangiovese, Petite Sirah, and Merlot) boasts copious aromas of sweet creme de cassis fruit intermixed with wild strawberries, spice box, loamy soil, pepper, and roasted herbs. In the mouth, the wine reveals pure, rich, opulent fruit, medium to full body, no hard edges, and a luscious, fleshy style that is difficult to resist. It should age easily for 5-10 years, but it is already irresistible.

2007 Bacio Divino Bacio Divino add to summary
91 points. Interesting for its mix of sweet berries and currants along with hints of green olives and a slight tangy twist, this full-bodied bottling is very nicely balanced overall even if a bit fleshy at the front of the palate. Like its mate bottled under Janzen (see below), this wine has an outgoing and easily tasted personality yet boasts sufficient underlying structure to reward cellar aging.

2007 Bacio Divino Vagabond add to summary
90 points. The opaque purple-hued 2007 Vagabond (a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and a touch of Viognier) offers a big, sweet kiss of spring flowers, black fruits, spice, charcoal, and a hint of road tar. Dense and layered, but light on its feet for so much fruit and richness, it should drink well for 6-8 years.

2006 Bacio Divino Bacio Divino add to summary
91 points. Bacio Divino’s flagship wine represents an intriguing blend of primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, with small quantities of Sangiovese, Petite Sirah, and Merlot. The 2006 Bacio Divino Proprietary Red (1,000 cases) exhibits a deep ruby/purple color as well as notes of melted licorice, black currants, blueberries, and raspberries. This opulent, fleshy, fruity 2006 is hard to resist. It is best drunk during its first 4-5 years of life.

2006 Bacio Divino Bacio Divino add to summary
91 points. 65% Cabernet Sauvignon; 15% Sangiovese; 13% Merlot; 3% Petite Sirah; 2% Syrah; 2% Viognier. This somewhat unorthodox blending of grapes has produced a wine with attractive, bright, cherryish fruit tinged with notes of currants and orange rind. It is full and fairly supple on the palate, carries plenty of firming acid yet is softer in tannin than its cepage and energy might suggest. Long and just enough on the solid side as it finishes, it will drink well now and for the five years hence.

2006 Bacio Divino Pazzo add to summary
88 points. The seductive 2006 Pazzo may not be as rich as the 2005, but it offers a boatload of pleasure at a realistic price. It is a peppery, spicy, slightly herbal, deliciously fruity red that is meant to be consumed during its first 2-4 years of life.

It should be consumed over the next 4-5 years.

2005 Bacio Divino Bacio Divino add to summary
92 points.
Janzen’s flagship offering, the 2005 Bacio Divino Proprietary Red Wine, is a proprietary blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 18% Sangiovese, and the rest Petite Sirah. It boasts a deep ruby/purple hue in addition to aromas of black raspberries, black currants, licorice, incense, and background oak. Sexy, opulent, fleshy, full-bodied, and loaded with character, it can be enjoyed over the next 5-7 years. While proprietor Claus Janzen continues to fine-tune his Cabernet Sauvignon
program, the strength of his portfolio remains his innovative blends.

2005 Bacio Divino Pazzo add to summary
90 points. "The 2004 Pazzo, a gorgeous blend of 64% Sangiovese and the rest Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Syrah, Viognier, Zinfandel, and Charbono, is one of those wines that you wish every bistro and restaurant offered. A deep ruby color is accompanied by a sweet perfume of herbs, kirsch, spice, pepper, and earth. Supple-textured, seductive, and ripe, with decent acidity as well as achieved by smart blending. It's too bad so many California wineries are obsessed with varietal bottlings. There are 3,000 cases of this beauty, which should continue to drink well for another 3-4 years."

2005 Bacio Divino Pazzo add to summary
91 points. The 2005 Pazzo is a gorgeously hedonistic, flavorful blend of 73% Sangiovese and the rest small amounts of Petite Sirah, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and even a touch of the white varietal, Viognier. A fragrant perfume of sweet roasted herbs, kirsch, black currants, and pepper jumps from the glass of this supple-textured, fleshy wine. The ideal bistro-styled red, it will be fun to drink over the next 2-3 years. While proprietor Claus Janzen continues to fine-tune his Cabernet Sauvignon program, the strength of his portfolio remains his innovative blends.

Aged completely in French oak, it boasts a dense ruby/purple hue, a big sweet, blackberry, flower, pepper, coffee, and chocolate-scented bouquet, full body, and a soft, expansive sytle. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. Outstanding."

93 points. The other top-notch offering is the 2005 Vagabond, a brilliant blend of 60% Syrah and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. Its dark plum/purple color is accompanied by a rich, sweet bouquet of camphor, blackberries, acacia flowers, and a touch of bacon fat. Beautiful richness, silky texture, and a fullbodied, voluptuous finish suggest this stunning, hedonistic as well as intellectually pleasing wine will provide immense pleasure over the next 7-8 years. While proprietor Claus Janzen continues to finetune his Cabernet Sauvignon program, the strength of his portfolio remains his innovative blends.

91 points. "Wonderful intensity and purity of fruit, with spicy, peppery blackberry and wild berry flavors and hazelnut and cedar notes. Deftly balanced, long and persistent on the finish, gaining complexity. Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Outstanding."

2005 Bacio Divino Vagabond add to summary
91 points. "Given its varietal mix, it is not especially surprising that this imposing, full bodied bottling speaks to Syrah with a less than strong voice. It does, however, show a full measure of richness with abundant, blackberry fruit framed by a sweet and equally plentiful oak and it shows a nice sense of suppleness."
