2011 St. Michael-Eppan Sanct Valentin Sauvignon

This is one of the most beautiful Sauvignons made in Italy. The cool mountainous climate of the Dolomites has shaped a fragrant and elegant wine with tons of exotic fruit, white pepper, dried sage and tangerine. There’s a touch of roundness in the mouth that gives it extra staying power. —M.L.

2010 St. Michael-Eppan Pinot Bianco Schulthauser
add to summary
91 points.
The Weissburgunder (Pinot Bianco) Shulthauser is typically one of the stand-outs in San Michele’s mid-range wines, as it is again in 2010. The aromas and flavors are beautifully delineated in this layered, expressive Pinot Bianco. White stone fruits, flowers and crushed rocks wrap around the insistent, layered finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2015. I found many delicious wines in this lineup from St. Michael Eppan. The house is best known for their top of the line Sanct-Valentin wines that emphasize textural softness. As good as those wines can be, the sweet spot at St. Michael lies just below, in the vineyard-designated range.

This pretty Pinot Grigio would pair with or cream of shrimp risotto. There’s a dry mineral note of brimstone and granite beyond more obvious tones of peach and citrus.

2010 St. Michael-Eppan Pinot Grigio Anger
add to summary
89 points.
The 2010 Pinot Grigio Anger is a pretty, focused wine laced with flint, gunpowder, white stone fruits and crushed rocks. This is an especially taut, wiry style of Pinot Grigio that captures the essence of Alto Adige. With time in the glass the wine gains additional volume and depth, yet remains pointed and nicely articulated throughout.

2010 St. Michael-Eppan Sanct Valentin Pinot Grigio

The 2010 Pinot Grigio Sanct-Valentin is a rich, textured wine bursting with fruit. The distinctly tropical flavors along with the prominent oak are frankly a bit distracting here. Some readers may enjoy this style, but I do not. Alto Adige Pinot Grigio can be so much more. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2014. I found many delicious wines in this lineup from St. Michael Eppan. The house is best known for their top of the line Sanct-Valentin wines that emphasize textural softness. As good as those wines can be, the sweet spot at St. Michael lies just below, in the vineyard-designated range.

The 2010 Sauvignon Sanct-Valentin emerges from the glass with expressive layers of green pears, white peaches, sage, tomato leaf and mint. This is a fairly restrained, mineral-driven vintage for the Sauvignon Sanct-Valentin, but it works beautifully here. I especially like the energy and sheer verve in the 2010. Intense mineral notes linger on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2015. I found many delicious wines in this lineup from St. Michael Eppan. The 2009 Pinot Bianco Schulthauser offers up apricot and peach notes intermingled with light floral honey. Here’s a top-shelf expression of Pinot Grigio that shares the best qualities of a high-level white wine. In fact, it offers a whole new face for the popular Italian white wine thanks to its complexity and rich density. It delivers aromas of mature fruit, vanilla cream, honeysuckle and stone fruit.

2009 St. Michael-Eppan Sanct Valentin Sauvignon
add to summary
91 points.
The 2009 Sauvignon Sanct Valentin is strikingly beautiful in this vintage. Mint, flowers, tomato leaf, sage and white peaches are woven into silky, textured fabric of notable class. This is a softer, more voluptuous style than the Lahn, but in 2009 there isn't as much of a qualitative difference as in most vintages. The Sanct Valentin is one of Italy's most famous Sauvignons, and this is another fine vintage in a series of terrific wines. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2015

Good medium-straw color. Textbook sauvignon aromas of lemon, white grapefruit, fresh herbs and peppery spices. Enters chewy and spicy, then shows good density and outstanding complexity to its dried apricot, lemon drop, lemon icing and gooseberry flavors. Intense, sharply focused citrus and pear skin notes are underscored by vivid minerality on the long, vibrant finish. Confirms itself to be one of Italy's very best sauvignons virtually every vintage.

The 2009 Sauvignon Lahn, on the other hand, is a classy effort. An open, varietally expressive bouquet melds into beautifully layered, textured fruit in this mineral-laced, taut Sauvignon. In 2009 the Lahn has a touch more body than ususal, which is quite welcome. this is a fabulous wine for the money. Anticipated maturity:2011-2014
