The estate’s 2008 Madre is 50% Sangiovese and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon. It is one of the better wines of this challenging year. The Sangiovese and Cabernet come together nicely in this harmonious, expressive red. Layers of dark fruit, menthol, spices and new leather flow to the fresh, vibrant finish. The 2008 is a somewhat compact Madre, but all of the elements are very well integrated. Hints of sweet oak linger on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018. This is the best wine ever from Poggio Antico. Aromas of blackberries and flowers follow through to a full body, with ultra-fine tannins and a polished tannin mouth-feel. This is really structured, yet elegant. Wonderful purity. Better in 2014, but who can wait?

Good full red. Very pure but subdued aromas of raspberry, rose petal and spices, along with a suggestion of chocolate. Then almost surprisingly plush and sensual on the palate, and distinctly sweeter than the 2007 classico, showing a flavor of cherry liqueur. Extract-rich and dense in texture without betraying any heaviness. Finishes with excellent spine and thrust and good medicinal reserve. This will need time to absorb its serious dusting of tannins.

The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Altero is a gorgeous, sleek wine laced with dark red cherries, kirsch, menthol, pine and spices. Sweet floral notes wrap around the silky finish. The 2007 stands out for its finessed texture and impeccable overall balance. I can’t remember a more polished, elegant vintage of Altero. Poggio Antico hit it out of the park. The 2007 spent 24 months in 500-liter French oak tonneaux.

Mature-looking medium concentrated ruby. A touch candied and peppery on the nose. Sweetly
perfumed. Very extracted, but with the right amount of acidity and with enormous length. Quite brash oak treatment, but the wine pulls it off in style. Modernist. Drink: 2012- 2022. "Number 3 of 81 wines reviewed."

Bright, deep red. Aromas of black raspberry and sexy oak are a bit less forthcoming than those of the classico. Thick and sweet but with great energy in the mouth, although quite closed in on itself today. Today this very dense, tightly coiled wine shows less minerality but more chocolatey oak than the regular cuvee and would appear to need longer in bottle to come into harmony. Late notes of coffee and mocha.
