2010 D R - Dauvergne Ranvier Chateauneuf-du-Pape Grand Vin add to summary
91 points. A slightly firm, extracted style, with a strong singed apple wood and alder frame to the dark cherry, blackberry paste and plum sauce flavors that give way to plum skin and spice on the finish. Lightly chewy in the end, but there’s a fresh perfume of mint and savory as well, which should help this stretch out a bit more. Best from 2014 through 2027.—J.M.

2010 D R - Dauvergne Ranvier Gigondas - Vin Rare add to summary
90+ points. The 2010 Gigondas Vin Rare comes from the estate’s highest elevation vineyard planted on clay and alluvial gravel. Composed of 80% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 5% Mourvedre, it is aged in small oak for 15 months prior to being bottled. More backward and tannic than its sibling, it boasts a dense purple color along with sweet aromas of black currants, black raspberries, incense, camphor and crushed rock/wet steel. Full-bodied and rich with lots of structure, it will benefit from 1-2 years of cellaring, and should drink well for 12-15 years thereafter. This estate owns just under 10 acres of vines in Gigondas planted at a northeasterly exposition at a high altitude of 300 to 450 meters.

90 points. Opaque ruby. Ripe dark berries and candied flowers on the intensely perfumed nose and in the mouth. Lush and open-knit, with more freshness than I perceived last year (I suspect that my sample was tired) and deep blackberry and cherry flavors given spine by juicy acidity. Finishes spicy and long, with a hint of dark fruit preserves.

2010 D R - Dauvergne Ranvier Vacqueyras Vin Rare add to summary
90-92 pts (80% grenache and 20% syrah): Bright violet color. Captivating aromas of crystallized raspberry, cherry, garrigue, incense and lavender. Then intensely flavored and alluringly sweet, with red berry and floral pastille flavors that stain the palate. Very young and tight, but with impressive and density finishing sweetness.

91 points. Vivid purple. Intense red berry preserve and floral scents are complemented by musky herbs and flowers. Sappy and precise on the palate, offering bitter cherry and raspberry flavors and a touch of candied flowers. Silky tannins come on late and give shape to the long, appealingly sweet finish.

91 points. This selection shows pure black-cherry fruit on the nose, then it folds in hints of flowers, spices, chocolate and coffee on the palate. It’s full bodied and creamy in texture without being heavy, then finishes long. Ready to drink, but should easily hold another 5–6 years. The Sorting Table. —J.C.

2009 D R - Dauvergne Ranvier Gigondas - Vin Rare add to summary
90-92 (80% grenache, 15% syrah and 5% mourvedre) Deep ruby. Smoky dark berries and cherry compote on the nose, with complicating notes of licorice and singed plum. A spicy quality comes up with air and carries onto the palate, which features flavors of boysenberry, blackberry and licorice. Leaves a trail of smoky dark fruit liqueur behind on the ripe finish. (I also had the chance to taste the 2007 Gigondas Vin Rare and it's showing an impressive array of deep, sweet red and dark berry flavors, with excellent clarity and a wild floral quality. It's drinking well now but should be even better in a couple of years. I scored it 90 points a year ago.)

2009 D R - Dauvergne Ranvier Saint Joseph - Vin Rare add to summary
88-90 These two potentially outstanding wines from this small firm are both very concentrated, with the 2009 St.-Joseph revealing more minerality and floral notes intermixed with strawberry, black cherry and licorice characteristics.

2009 D R - Dauvergne Ranvier Vacqueyras Vin Rare add to summary
90-92 (an 80/20 blend of grenache and syrah) Deep ruby. Powerful, deeply pitched aromas of cassis, violet and black olive; I'd have guessed there was a lot more syrah in here. Lush, creamy dark fruit compote flavors are complicated by notes of licorice and white pepper, with a subtle floral nuance in the background. The finish repeats the licorice note and lingers with good tenacity and gentle sweetness.

2007 D R - Dauvergne Ranvier Gigondas - Vin Rare add to summary
91 points. A brilliant effort, this dense opaque ruby/purple-colored 2007 exhibits notes of roasted meats, bouquet garni, blueberries, blackberries, and hints of licorice as well as camphor. Full-bodied, powerful, and dense with beautiful purity, length, and texture, this sleeper of the vintage should evolve for 10-12 years.
