2011 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Bourgogne Blanc add to summary
88 points. All of the vines here are located in the village of Chassagne, and for the last few years this has been one of my favorite examples made in the Côte d’Or. This and the St. Aubin had been bottled in September. The nose on the ’08 Bourgogne offers up a fresh 156 mélange of pear, lemon, apple blossoms and really lovely minerality. On the palate the wine is medium-full, long and crisp, with lovely balance and a long and classy finish. Really a lovely example this year. 2009-2019. 88

85-87 This was just bottled a couple of days before my visit, but was still showing pretty well. The bouquet is a blend of black cherries, dark berries, chocolate and soil tones. On the palate the wine is fullish, long and juicy, with silky tannins and sneaky length and grip. This will be a good bottle. 2009-2016. 85-87

2010 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Batard Montrachet add to summary
94 points. The 2010 Batard-Montrachet is simply fabulous. Honey, butter, spices and hazelnuts add complexity to the fruit as this dramatic Burgundy opens up in the glass. The Batard is sweet, voluptuous and very, very pretty. In 2010, Moreau had enough fruit for just one barrel, so the wine was aged in 100% new oak for 12 months followed by neutral oak for 6 months. The Batard is a striking wine in every way. It will be even better once the new oak integrates a little more.

2010 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Bourgogne Blanc add to summary
88 points. The 2010 Bourgogne is an attractive, fleshy wine with good depth and terrific overall balance. Floral notes add lift on the precise, crystalline finish. This is a Bourgogne that speaks to finesse above all else.

2010 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Bourgogne Rouge add to summary
86 points. An earthy, fresh and ripe dark berry fruit nose merges into round, generous and flshy flavors where the supporting phenolics are clearly mature. This is on the rustic side but delicious and while it could be enjoyed immediatly, it will also repay a few years of cellar time.

2010 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne Montrachet add to summary
90 points. Moreau’s 2010 Chassagne-Montrachet impresses for its weightless elegance. There is plenty of Chassagne character, but none of the heaviness that is common in this part of Burgundy. Layers of juicy yellow-toned fruits build to the textured, inviting finish. I find a lot to like in Moreau’s entry-level Chassagne.

2010 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Maltroie add to summary
93 points. The 2010 Chassagne-Montrachet Maltroie wraps around the palate with layers of expressive, silky fruit. Pears, white flowers and flint all take shape in the glass. The Maltroie impresses for its fabulous length, and poised, centered personality. Saline notes mark the intense, mineral-drenched finish. This is a fabulous showing.

2010 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Champs Gain add to summary
92 points. One of the hidden gems in this range, the 2010 Chassagne-Montrachet Champs Gain bursts from the glass with hints of nectarine, orange, mint, honey and butter. This is a decidedly racy, overt wine, especially in the aromas and flavors, although texturally it is a bit more laid back. It all adds up to a Burgundy of pure class. In 2010, the Champs Gain is flat-out delicious. It also happens to be singing, even today.

2010 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Les Chenevottes add to summary
93 points. I am intrigued by 2010 Chassagne-Montrachet Chenevottes, as structurally it is much more like a red wine than a white. Initially quite rich and expressive, the Chenevottes shuts down a bit in the glass. It is another wine that combines textural body and ripeness with outstanding energy and a definite tilt towards a more forward expression of fruit. Nectarine, apricot and vanillin are some of the nuances that wrap around the intense, focused finish. The Chenevottes will appeal most to readers who like firm whites, but it needs time to fully come together in the bottle. Nevertheless, it is striking.

2010 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Les Vergers add to summary
93 points. Moreau’s 2010 Chassagne-Montrachet Vergers is a seamless, complete wine that brings together the body of Champs Gain with the minerality of Maltroie. It is a gorgeous, complete Burgundy that should drink well with minimum cellaring, although it has more than enough stuffing and pedigree to continue to develop beautifully for years.

2010 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Morgeot add to summary
94 points. The 2010 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot is wonderfully alive and vivid in the glass. It boasts intense minerality and brightness along with a personality that is hard to fully grasp today. There is a fabulous element of push and pull between the fruit and the wine’s acidity. Smoke, crushed rocks and mint are layered into the explosive, palate-staining finish. The Morgeot is fabulous, but it needs time. A recent bottle of the 2008 was compelling in its pure beauty.

2010 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne Montrachet Vieilles Vignes Rouge add to summary
88 points. A classic Chassagne nose of black pepper, dark berries and pungent earth nuances leads to rich, generous and solidly well-concentrated flavors that are shaped by firm and mildly rustic tannins. There is by contrast plenty of buffering dry extract that imparts a velvety mouth feel to the attractively persistent finish. Fine quality at this level.

2010 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Grandes Ruchottes add to summary
94 points. The result of painfully low yields, Moreau’s 2010 Chassagne-Montrachet Grand Ruchottes flows from the glass with stunning depth and precision. This is another vivid, totally alive Burgundy endowed with superb purity, class and delineation. Stylistically it tends towards the richer end of the spectrum, as it bears more than a passing resemblance to a red wine in its weight and overall palate sensation. Hints of tropical fruit leave a lasting impression on the haunting finish.

2010 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chevalier Montrachet Grand Cru add to summary
95 points. The newest addition to the lineup is the 2010 Chevalier-Montrachet. Hints of pear, white flowers, floral honey and chamomile appear on the bouquet, followed by a bloom of expressive fruit. The Chevalier is unctuous and oily on the palate, yet not at all heavy. Subtle hints of cinnamon and nutmeg appear on the sensual finish. What a gorgeous wine.

2010 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Volnay Caillerets add to summary
91 points. A beautiful nose of spice, stone, violets and cassis introduces rich, generous and unusually full-bodied flavors that brim with both plenty of extract but also the hallmark minerality of classic Caillerets. There is good power as well as fine detail on the notably firm but impeccably will-balanced, focused and lingering finish. Interstingly, this is actually a bit less refined than the Clos des Chênes but compensates through even better length. A qualitative choice.
Burghound, 03/2012
2010 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Volnay Clos des Chênes add to summary
91 points. There is enough reduction present that I would strongly advise decanting this if you're going to try a bottle young. There is more refinement but also more power as the middle weight flavors prossess a silky mouth feel while culminating in a complex, long pure and ever-so-mildly austere finish. I very much like the style and while the reduction detracts somewhat from the overall appeal at present, my score assumes that this is simply a residual effect from the recent bottling and nothing permanent.
Burghound, 03/2012
2010 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Volnay Santenots add to summary
90 points. This is notably more elegant with a lovely aromatic profile of violets, earth, spice and fresh red berries. There is good richness and volume to the round yet precise medium-bodied flavors that possess plenty of verve and subtle minerality on the sneaky long finish.

2009 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Batard Montrachet add to summary
94 points. The 2009 Batard-Montrachet impresses for its sensual personality. Intense, perfumed floral and minty notes meld into citrus and peaches in this exceptionally elegant, refined wine. This is quite simply striking from start to finish. Moreau’s parcel is on the Chassagne side. Anticipated maturity: 2014+. Alex Moreau showed me a wide range of wines during my recent visit. The 2009s were brought in with natural alcohols between 12.5-13%. Moreau told me the fermentations lasted 4-6 months, with no batonnage or racking, and that his goal was to retain as much freshness, which meant using relatively low levels of new oak (30% max for the premier crus.) The wines spent 12 months in oak followed by six months in steel prior to being bottled. This a beautiful set of 2009s. The wines are distinguished by their finesse and exceptional overall balance. I only had a chance to taste a few 2010s, as my schedule was pretty tight the day I visited, but the wines I sampled are very promising. Importer: The Sorting Table, Napa, CA; tel. (707) 603-1461

2009 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Bourgogne Blanc add to summary
85 points. (from Chassagne vines and 100% barrel aged in 4 to 5 year old oak). A ripe but fresh and very pinot nose has added breadth due to pepper and warm earth nuances where the latter element continues onto the delicious and solidly persistent finish that is only mildly rustic. This should drink well young.

2009 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne Montrachet add to summary
Not Scored The 2009 Chassagne-Montrachet is a very pretty wine if somewhat delicate and even a touch fragile. The Chassagne is made 70% from vineyards on the border with Puligny and 30% vineyards in the heart of Chassagne, which explains much of its personality. Sweet pears and flowers linger on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012+

2009 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Les Chenevottes add to summary
Not Scored The 2009 Chassagne-Montrachet Chenevottes is another of the bigger, more powerful wines here. This, too, is attractive, if slightly less polished than the best wines. The virile finish is decidedly weighty. Chenevottes is usually the first vineyard to be harvested at the domaine. Today, it looks like 2009 was not the easiest of years. Anticipated maturity: 2013+

91 points. The 2009 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Vergers is a gorgeous, striking wine laced with slate, crushed rocks and white stone fruits. It shows plenty of Chassange character in a classy, nuanced style that is highly attractive. The chiseled, well-articulated finish is quite pretty. Anticipated maturity: 2012+.

2009 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru Maltroie add to summary
91 points. The 2009 Chassagne-Montrachet La Maltroie shows the more muscular side of Chassagne in its deep layers of fruit. This will appeal to readers who appreciate a fuller style than some of the other wines here. The deep, muscular finish rounds things out nicely. This is another first-rate effort. Anticipated maturity:2013+.

2009 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Grandes Ruchottes add to summary
92 points. The 2009 Chassagne-Montrachet Grand Ruchottes is a gorgegous wine. It blossoms in all directions with gorgeous, textured fruit and expressive aromatics. Sweet petrol notes develop in the glass, giving the wine a very unique personality. This is a decidedly large-scaled, textured Burgundy, but all of the elements are superbly balanced. This old vine parcel (planted in 1939) yielded a wine of considerable pedigree and sheer class. Anticipated maturity: 2014+.

not rated The 2009 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot presents attractive, floral notes that add lift and freshness to the exotic fruit. Lime, citrus and pears appear later, adding further complexity. 89-92 (vinified with 33% whole clusters). A very ripe nose of pepper, earth, violets and pungent earth aromas marries into rich, full, suave and opulent medium weight flavors that possess excellent complexity on the mouth coating and lingering finish. This is really quite good and should age well.

89-92 (from purchased grapes and vinified with 33% hole clusters). An extremely ripe nose of cassis,
plum liqueur and wet stone nuances give way to rich, intense and detailed flavors that also evidence obvious minerality on the quite powerful and notably persistent finish. This is a bit too ripe for me but there is no denying that this is a quality effort as it’s balanced.

2009 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Volnay Clos des Chênes add to summary
89-91 (from purchased grapes). This is significantly fresher than the Santenots though here too the nose is quite ripe with cassis and red berry liqueur aromas that are cut with warm earth notes. The opulent and suave medium-bodied flavors possess good concentration and power on the persistent finish.

2009 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Volnay Santenots add to summary
86-89 (from purchased grapes). A discreet touch of wood sets off very ripe dark berry fruit and plum
aromas that lead to rich, round, suave and mouth coating flavors that seem somewhat flat and heavy on the moderately persistent finish. While this avoids being roasted it is riper than I can personally appreciate.

95+ points. It is a pity that there is only one barrel of this great wine, but one barrel is a lot better than zero barrels, and it is really gratifying to see Alexandre Moreau now with a grand cru in his lineup. The bouquet is deep, complex and flat out stunning, as it soars from the glass in a beautiful mélange of lemon, apple, orange, lemon blossoms, a great base of soil and a nice touch of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, long and absolutely rock solid at the core, with brisk acids, laser-like focus and a huge, racy and very, very long finish. A great Bâtard-Montrachet. 2016-2040. 95+

90+ points. The Chassagne villages had been racked into stainless steel tanks at the end of July and was destined to be bottled just before Christmas. This is very pure and very elegant this year, as it offers up a classy mélange of apple, lemon, a lovely base of soil tones and the faintest framing of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and very soil-driven, with fine mid-palate depth, lovely acids and a very long, nicely reserved finish. A fine AC. 2010-2025. 90+

2008 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Champs Gain add to summary
91+ points. The 2008 Champgains is a tad more closed than the last two premier crus and will need just a year or two longer in the cellar before it starts to really drink well. The bouquet offers up a fine mélange of lime, pear, stony soil tones, citrus zest and just a touch of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and a bit brooding at the present time, with a fine core of fruit, brisk acids, lovely focus and a very long, soildriven finish. Where it will be possible to drink the Vergers or the Maltroie relatively early on and find great enjoyment in them, the Champgains really will want to be left alone in the cellar for at least the next three or four years. But the quality here is very promising- just a bit of patience will be needed. 2012-2030. 91+

2008 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Les Chevenottes add to summary
92 points. Monsieur Moreau observed that the ripeness always mounts quickly in Chenevottes, and this is always the first premier cru that he harvests each year, to make sure that he can keep this wine light on its feet. The 2008 Chenevottes is certainly that, as it offers up an excellent bouquet of oranges, apples, pears, a lovely base of white soil tones and a touch of new wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, long and quite generous on the attack, with a fine core of fruit, bright acids and lovely grip on the long and focused finish. A lovely bottle. 2012-2025+. 92

93+ points. The Grands Ruchottes is always the finest of this very impressive lineup of premier crus, and the 2008 will be simply outstanding. The deep and complex nose offers up scents of pear, lemon, a great, complex base of soil tones, orange zest, spring flowers 158 and a discreet framing of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and quite reserved at the present time, with a rock solid core of fruit, bright acids, great focus and a very, very long, racy finish. 2008 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cru Morgeot add to summary
92+ points. In my experience, the two finest examples of Morgeot made in Chassagne hail from Domaines Moreau and Ramonet, and I am not sure if with this specific cru, Domaine Ramonet does not come in second. The Moreau example of Morgeot is always racy and very minerally in style, and this has dovetailed perfectly with the style of the vintage in 2008, as the wine offers up an exceptional mélange of lemon, orange, apple, stony minerality and a topnote of citrus zest. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and snappy, with great transparency, beautiful focus and a very long, complex and nicely reserved finish. A really fine example of the vintage. 2014-2030+. 92+

2008 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne Montrachet Premier Cur Maltroie add to summary
91+ points. The Maltroie had also been racked and assembled in stainless steel tanks in July, but had not yet been fined and was not likely to be bottled before the early spring. Maltroie can sometimes be a touch top-heavy, but this is emphatically not the case with Alexandre Moreau’s example, and this wine is particularly vibrant and pure in 2008. The wine offers up simply beautiful fruit on the nose, as it wafts from the glass in a mix of pear, lemon zest, tangerine, lovely soil tones and a topnote of citrus blossoms. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and racy, with fine mid-palate depth, beautiful focus and a nice sense of reserve on the long finish that nicely balances the succulent fruit on the attack. A very classy bottle. 2012-2025+. 91+

90 points. True to form, the St. Aubin “en Remilly” was aged in twenty percent new oak in 2008, and it too is excellent. The bouquet is deep and vibrant, as it jumps from the glass in a blend of white flowers, pears, lemon zest, just a touch of vanillin oak and a lovely base of chalky minerality. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, crisp and racy, with lovely, succulent fruit on the attack, lovely focus and fine length and grip on the snappy backend. 2009-2022. 90

88-90+ The Volnay “Santenots” was one of the last wines in the cellar to finish its malo, and this can be felt in the bit of malic acid that is still perking up the backend at the present time. But this will be an excellent wine in time, as it offers up a fine bouquet of black cherries, dark berries, a touch of game, woodsmoke, complex soil tones and a bit of spicy oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and nicely sappy at the core, with tangy acids, moderate tannins and excellent length and grip on the bouncy finish. Once this settles in, it will be quite fine. 2015-2035. 88-90+

89 points. Fresh lime, white peach, a hint of red berry, and a dusty chalky overlay greet the nose from a glass of Moreau's 2007 Chassagne-Montrachet. Subtly creamy in texture, this lacks a bit of the primary juiciness one finds in the best wines of its vintage, but there is certainly a chalky suggestion of things mineral and admirable persistence. It serves as a very polished and well-proportioned introduction to its appellation that will probably be best enjoyed over the next 2-3 years.

90-92 Here the nose offers another small step up in aromatic elegance with a lightlyspiced citrus blossom and orchard fruit nose that gives way to fresh, pure and beautifully detailed middle weight flavors thatpossess plenty of underlying tension on the racy, linear and energetic finish. 91 points. Candied lemon rind, white peach, and jellied red currant on the nose of the Moreaus' 2007 Chassagne-Montrachet Maltroie signal a more obvious sense of ripeness than in their Chenevottes, but the combination of fresh citrus, citrus zest, tart red berry skin, and peach fuzz-like prickle makes for every bit as much refreshment and invigoration here and an emphatically long, energetic, gripping finish.

90-93 A very pretty and layered ripe nose of primarily yellow orchard fruit aromas where the peach and apricot nuances continue onto the rich, full and supple middle weight flavors that possess very good volume and excellent intensity with more minerality than one typically finds in a classic example of Champ Gains, all wrapped in a finish where the same sense of underlying tension is palpable. Really a lovely effort. (90-93)/2012+

90 points. The Moreau 2007 Chassagne-Montrachet Champgains offers musky floral scents along with an aura of chalk dust; is saline and savory as well as brimming with ripe peach and apricot; juicy and refreshing yet rich and subtly creamy in texture; and finishes with cool fresh fruit character, refreshing cut, and admirable transparency to mineral and floral nuances. This may well have more potential than the corresponding village-level bottling – perhaps 3-5 years of satisfaction – although I lack experience with this estate and there is in any case scarcely a track record under the latest generation.

91 points. The Moreaus' 2007 Chassagne-Montrachet Chenevottes illustrates the clarity, lift, and energy that typify so many of the best wines of its vintage, and that seem to bespeak Alexandre Moreau's ideals. Scents of ripe apricot, lily-of-the-valley, and fresh lemon segue into a refreshing, buoyant, subtly creamy palate and a long, invigorating, multifaceted finish. I imagine this will be worth following for at least 5-6 years.

2007 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Grandes Ruchottes add to summary
92 points. The Moreau 2007 Chassagne-Montrachet Grandes Rouchottes smells of fresh lime and cassis, ripe peach and pineapple, and comes onto the palate with correspondingly effusive fruit concentration and refreshment. This has the elegance and lift of so many of the best 2007s without sacrificing a sense of underlying extract or minerality, in this case, an amalgam of chalky, stony, as well as Chablis-like meat stock elements. While it is less bracing and energetic than a couple of the other crus in its collection, there is a sense of transparency to nuance here – including a subtly bitter-sweet inner-mouth floral dimension – that will keep you enthralled through its protracted finish. This fascinating, polished 2007 should be worth following for at least 5-7 years.

91-94 2007 Chassagne-Montrachet “Grandes Ruchottes”
(from a .345 ha parcel of vines planted in 1939). This is almost always the class of the Moreau range and so it is again in 2007 with trace of wood spice that accompanies the pure and refined floral, peach and mineral notes which continue onto the citrus-infused, sweet and vibrant medium full flavors blessed with ample dry extract and a driving, bone dry finish. This is a powerful, understated and moderately austere wine that will need time to develop and should benefit from at least 5 years in the cellar first. Marvelous. (91-94)/2013+

Today, if you do open a bottle, watch for the mineral, stony character that pushes the fruit and demands attention.
