Collazzi

Villa Collazzi is one of the most impressive estates in all of Tuscany. This architectural landmark was originally designed by Michelangelo in 1560 for his friend, Agostino Dini. It offers commanding views of the surrounding countryside. I Collazzi is a property of the Marchi brothers, Carlo and Bona. During the last decade the Marchi brothers invested heavily in the development of Collazzi’s farming business, renewing the vineyards and restructuring the cellar, with the goal of producing excellent wines.

Estate vineyards in the southwestern part of Impruneta (Florence), near village of Galluzzo.

  • Climate: Normally warmer and drier than surrounding area, lying partly in natural ampitheater. Abundant isolation and mild daytime temperatures allow prolonged, complete physiological ripening, remarkably consistent year to year.
Harvest Notes
  • Each varietyhard harvested, plot picked, and and plot picked and vinified separately
  • Berries carefully hand selected on vibrating sorting table at cellar arrival
  • Fermented in small stainless steel barrels for approximately 18 days at 77ºF
  • Malolactic fermentation in 50% new, 50% second passage French oak barriques
  • Aged 18 months in new 225 liter French oak barrels
  • Bottle aged 6 months
Winemaker's Notes

Deep red color hints at the balsamic spicy notes, accompanied by the essences of black ripe fruits. Full bodied and silky on the tongue. The finish is round, with a finesse which comes from perfectly balanced structure. Elegant, complex in its aromas, rich and intense, with aa marked propensity to age in bottle for many years.

Lots of blackcurrant and mint on the nose with plums, too. It’s full-bodied with very integrated tannins that are chewy but beautiful and give length to the wine. Racy and solid. Cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc and petit verdot. Try after 2024.

Camphor, blue flower, dark-skinned berry and French oak aromas come to the forefront on this full-bodied red. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot, the savory, elegantly structured palate features ripe blackberry, cassis, mocha and ground pepper. Firm, refined tannins and fresh acidity provide support and balance.

The 2018 Collazzi from Tenuta I Collazzi is composed from a blend of fifty percent cabernet sauvignon, twenty-five percent cabernet franc, twenty percent merlot and five percent petit verdot. The vines are twenty-five years of age now and nicely into their prime. The wine undergoes malolactic in barriques, with half the casks new and half one wine barrels. It is raised in the same barrels for eighteen months prior to bottling and the 2018 version comes in at an even fourteen percent octane. The bouquet is deep, complex and classy, offering up scents of cassis,black cherries, lovely soil tones, cigar ash, brown spices, a dollop of fresh oregano and plenty of spicy new oak. On the palate the wine is precise, full-bodied and new oaky, with excellent midpalate depth, good soil signature, ripe, firm tannins and fine focus and grip on the long, wellbalanced and promising finish. I really like that this wine, despite being crafted entirely from Bordeaux varietals, retains plenty of Tuscan personality from its strong foundation of soil tones. It is fairly new oaky in personality, but the wood is well-integrated and the wine will age very gracefully. For my palate, this wine could be even more beautiful if the new oak regimen was stretched out a bit more, with maybe one quarter of the casks renewed each year, just to let the beautiful terroir here play an even more prominent role in the profile of the wine? But, it is very, very good the way it is! 2030 – 2075
