Tiberio

The story of Azienda Agricola Tiberio rings more like a new world tale than one from the old world of the ancient lands beneath the Majella and Gran Sasso mountains in Abruzzo. At 350 meters, twenty three miles inland from the seaside city of Pescara near the hillside town of Cugnoli, Riccardo Tiberio found an old plot of Trebbiano Abruzzese vines roughly 50 years old so impressive that he decided to change his and his family’s destiny.

Winemaker's Notes

Straw yellow color, tinged with green. A luminous wine, very mineral, with green apple, apricot, tangerine, lemon peel and nuances of white flowers and anise. Vibrant, precise, crystalline. Rich and tactile with a laser beam of lemony acidity. Finishes long with harmonious minerality and a flinty yet creamy texture.

Reviews

94 Points

Vivid pale straw-yellow. Penetrating, multifaceted nose of white peach, nectarine, minerals, chamomile and jasmine. Conveys an almost saline sense of extract in the mouth, offering steely, harmonious and high-acid flavors of white peach, minerals and anise. Steely and mineral notes linger on the long floral-accented finish. Once again, the magic of the Fonte Canale 80-year-old vines shines through in a year that saw almost seven months without rain in the Casauria subzone (where the Tiberio estate is located); the roots of these old vines dig deep and are always close to the underlying water table. The 2017 Fonte Canale strikes me as more perfumed and more open-knit than usual on the nose (especially compared to the 2016), but more lemony on the palate. 2022 – 2029

Abruzzo: Tiberio

Siblings Cristiana and Antonio Tiberio work solely with a massal selection of Abruzzo’s native grapes. ‘They represent the original genetic patrimony with distinct flavours of the region,’ says Cristiana. Her meticulous yet hands-off winemaking translates into impeccable wines, from the Cerasuolo (a dark and serious yet charming rosato) to the single-vineyard bottling Fonte Canale, crafted from 60-year-old Trebbiano Abruzzese vines.
