Tiberio
The story of Azienda Agricola Tiberio rings more like a new world tale than one from the old world of the ancient lands beneath the Majella and Gran Sasso mountains in Abruzzo. At 350 meters, twenty three miles inland from the seaside city of Pescara near the hillside town of Cugnoli, Riccardo Tiberio found an old plot of Trebbiano Abruzzese vines roughly 50 years old so impressive that he decided to change his and his family’s destiny.
Reviews
Bright ruby. Bitter red and black cherry, blackcurrant, tobacco and violet on the perfumed, inviting nose, along with an intriguing flinty quality. Fresh and energetic, but at the same time suave and silky in the mouth, with a concentrated dark cherry and fresh plum flavours. Impressively dense and serious for a wine in this price range, finishing with broad, fine tannins and outstanding length. 2024 – 2030
Cask sample. Impenetrable dark crimson. Blackberry, black pepper and mace with a hint of anchovies and iodine notes. Loads of embryonic blackberry fruit on the palate and firm but fine tannins, even a little finer than the 2020. Very intense, concentrated and embryonic. 2024 – 2030
Dark and understated, the 2021 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo smolders up from the glass with a woodland-inspired blend of dried black cherries, sage and shaved cedar. This enters the palate with a burst of inner sweetness complemented by silky textures that carry a dense wave of ripe red and hints of black fruit. Zesty acidity maintains balance through it all as the 2021 finishes structured with balsamic spice and a tart blackberry tinge. This shows the warmth of the vintage, especially in the tannins, yet maintains harmony throughout. That said, expect a darker and more intense rendition of Tiberio’s Montepulciano. 2024 – 2029
