Trig Point

“A “trig” has been used for many years to establish boundary lines. Trigonometrical stations were set on the top of hills and used as surveying sites. Just as my father was a land surveyor and used these trigs as a reference, so do I when it comes to well known vineyard sites” Nick Goldschmidt, Winemaker.

Vineyard Profile
  • A “trig” has been used for many years to establish boundary lines.  Trigonometrical stations were set on the top of hills and used as surveying sites.  Just as my father was a land surveyor and used these trigs as a reference, so do I when it comes to well-known vineyard sites.
  • The Railyard Vineyard sits just north of the town of Geyserville and was planted in pre-phylloxera times on St. George rootstock.  Vines planted on this “old fashioned” rootstock show more vigor than when planted on the more modern AXR1 type.  St. George also requires much less water, a key benefit, as California just posted the driest year on record.
Harvest Notes
  • Aging:  16 months.
  • Barrel Fermentation:  100%.
  • Barrels:  20% New, 25% American, 75% French.
  • Fining:  Un-fined and Unfiltered.
  • Release Date:  June 2016.
  • Cases Produced:  600 cs.
  • Another exceptional vintage in Alexander Valley with outstanding color and flavor development.
  • Ripe, black fruit characters and great concentration.
  • A warm, relatively dry spring through April and May produced very even flowering and fruit set.  We were a little worried in midsummer that sugars were ahead of flavor development, but cool weather in September stalled ripening.  The nights stayed cool-low 50s.  Yields were smaller than the previous two vintages.
Winemaker's Notes
  • Bold red fruit aromatics of cherry and raspberry with sage and licorice accents.
  • The classic strawberry and briary flavors carry through to blueberry, walnut, black pepper, and dried-leaf characters in the soft finish.
