K55 Hondarrabi Zuri Sobre Lias Getariako Txakolina – 2021

Region: Spain - País Vasco

Bodega K5

K5 Argiñano is a modern vineyard estate located on a hillside near the Basque village of Aia at 1000 feet above sea level overlooking the Cantabrian seaports of Zarautz and Orio.

Founded in 2005 by Spanish celebrity chef Karlos Argiñano and four partners, K5 is focused on showcasing the noble and age worthy quality of the indigenous Hondarribi Zuri and its ability to produce extracted, super-dry, mineral driven whites worthy of the finest table. The ultra-modern, gravity-flow bodega (designed by the famous architectural firm Alonso & Balaguer) is ideally matched to its environment and offers sweeping views of the surrounding countryside and seacoast. The first vintage was released in 2010.

The property totals 30 ha (74 acres) in total with 15 ha (37 acres) of dry farmed vineyards planted on slate and granite soils to the native grape,  Hondarribi Zuri. Yields are limited to under 2 kilos per vine.  The wine is aged for six months on the fine lees for complexity.

The remaining 15 ha (37 acres) are comprised of forests and the little paths surrounding the cellar, full of beech, chestnut and oak trees.

Made for ageing, this Txakolí spends 11 months on lees. It’s springtime fresh with cut grass and green apple aromas. There’s real drive and energy to the wine which displays vibrant lemon and impressive concentration on the palate. A tiny bit of reduction adds to the complexity. 2024 – 2025

Rapierlike acidity trills through this vivid, layered white, with rich notes of chopped hazelnut, poached apricot, blood orange curd and fleur de sel. The initial, lip-smacking impression softens midpalate as the flavor range expands into the well-defined finish. Drink now.

The 2021 K5, from their vines planted in 2005 on laminar slate and granite soils, showcases the house style of fresh and aromatic whites, with notes of fresh herbs. It’s floral, with citrus freshness and a salty feeling. They age the wine for 12 months with the lees—without bâtonnage—and give it time in bottle to polish the high acidity. 2021 was a moderate year with milder temperatures and very complete wines that combine power with elegance, and the wine finished with 12% alcohol, a pH of 3.0 and 9.1 grams of acidity coupled with a dry finish. 14,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2024. It should be long lived. 2026 – 2040

I also tasted the 2020 and 2015, which showed a similar profile despite being warm and powerful vintages, with a subtler and more nuanced nose, still lemony and herbal but with great resistance to oxidation. They show freshness, complexity and still lively mouthfeels, with the acidity getting polished and more integrated with years in bottle, and neither of them is anywhere near the end of their lives.
