Castello di Ama

Castello di Ama was founded in 1976, and is located in Gaiole in Chianti, within the additional geographical unit of the same name (UGA), located in the heart of Tuscany. It is located about 12 miles northeast of Siena in the hills of Gaiole. This is the heart of Chianti Classico, a bucolic rolling landscape of woods, vineyards and olive groves.

The estate is currently helmed by CEO Lorenza Sebasti, a member of the second generation of one of the four founding families. Marco Pallanti, who was once the President of the Chianti Classico Consorzio, has been the winemaker and technical director at Castello di Ama since 1982.

The goal of the estate is to have each bottle of Castello di Ama express the uniqueness of the terroir, and be an authentic expression of the vintage. Ama has practiced sustainable viticulture since the end of the 1990s, and recently received Equalitas (Italy) certification.

Harvest Notes
  • 2018 experienced a great diurnal temperature swing in Autumn, producing good aroma development
  • 2018 wines will be fruity with an excellent freshness and good alcohol balance
  • Extraordinary polyphenol content producing thoroughbred wines, elegant, powerful with good body
  • Multiple samples and organoleptic analyses in vineyard and lab determined date of harvest
  • Hand harvested September 18 into 10-12kg crates
  • Vinification with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures 86-89ºF
  • Manual pumpovers and total cuvaison for 13 days
  • After racking, wine goes through malolactic fermentation
  • After ML, transfered to oak barriques of thin grain for 12 months
Winemaker's Notes

The color is intense red. Primary aromas typical of Pinot Nero (strawberry, cherry, blueberry, violet), becoming much more complex with time. On the palate, the attack is fresh, harmonious and complex. A sublimely elegant wine, exquistely balanced, replete with fruity overtones and plush tannins.

The 2018 Pinot Nero Il Chiuso opens with pretty aromatics laced with scents of crushed berries, mint, spice and anise. On the palate, the Chiuso is a bit clenched. It will be interesting to see if a more richness develops in bottle. 2021 – 2028

The Castello di Ama 2018 Pinot Nero di Toscana Il Chiuso is a dark and sultry expression of the Burgundian grape that shows lots of sunshine and Tuscan flare. The bouquet offers blue and purple fruits with pretty rose and violet woven carefully into the fruit. The wine is rigorously mid-weight, but this Italian interpretation ultimately delivers more heft, power and flavor concentration. That extra textural support gives this wine the ability to pair with the robust pasta dishes of Tuscany, maybe with a shaving or two of black truffle applied on top. Warm-climate Tuscany and the cool 2018 vintage work in lockstep to create this harmonious and balanced wine. 2021 – 2026

A bright, fruity pinot noir with strawberry and cherry aromas and flavors. Medium body, round and creamy tannins and a fruity finish. Some citrus at the end. No real reason to wait on this. Drink or hold.
