Bastioni Dei Collazzi Chianti Classico – 2022

Region: ITALY - TUSCANY

Collazzi

Villa Collazzi is one of the most impressive estates in all of Tuscany. This architectural landmark was originally designed by Michelangelo in 1560 for his friend, Agostino Dini. It offers commanding views of the surrounding countryside. I Collazzi is a property of the Marchi brothers, Carlo and Bona. During the last decade the Marchi brothers invested heavily in the development of Collazzi’s farming business, renewing the vineyards and restructuring the cellar, with the goal of producing excellent wines. Collazzi produces grapes from this esteemed estate only; a super-Tuscan blend called Collazzi, Chianti Classico named Bastioni, and a select few additional bottlings.

Here is a juicy, fruity and playful Chianti Classico with baked cherries, raspberries and sweet spices on the nose. It’s medium-bodied with fine, firm tannins. Juicy and generous core of red fruit at the center, with a succulent, pulpy finish. Drink now.

San Casciano. 80% Sangiovese, 18% Merlot, 2% Malvasia Nera.
Deep crimson. A little subdued on the nose. Lush, sappy, juicy fruit, with plenty of gritty tannins on the finish. Solid. 2024 – 2028

The estate’s Chianti Classico vineyards are at the northern limit of the zone, in the warm district of San Casciano. For the annata, a dash of Malvasia Nera is co-fermented with Sangiovese, while the Merlot is vinified separately. Aged in third-passage French oak barriques, it is polished and polite. Aromas are discreet yet attractive, ranging from cedar and garden herbs to cinnamon and nutmeg. The palate is plush with blueberry pie and fresh blackberry flavours, tapering off quickly with a pop of vanilla. Gentle tannins are nestled in.

The nose invigorates with piercing aromas of black cherry, plum, flint and coffee, while the palate sweetens but stays cohesive, with riper cherries, plums and figs swirling above undertones of earth. Polished but grippy tannins structure a warm, citrus finish.
