Bastioni Dei Collazzi Chianti Classico – 2023

Region: ITALY - TUSCANY

Collazzi

Villa Collazzi is one of the most impressive estates in all of Tuscany. This architectural landmark was originally designed by Michelangelo in 1560 for his friend, Agostino Dini. It offers commanding views of the surrounding countryside. I Collazzi is a property of the Marchi brothers, Carlo and Bona. During the last decade the Marchi brothers invested heavily in the development of Collazzi’s farming business, renewing the vineyards and restructuring the cellar, with the goal of producing excellent wines. Collazzi produces grapes from this esteemed estate only; a super-Tuscan blend called Collazzi, Chianti Classico named Bastioni, and a select few additional bottlings.

San Casciano. 85% Sangiovese, 10% Malvasia Nera, 5% Merlot. Cask sample.
Impressive, dark ruby. Lots of concentration on the nose. Cherry jam and amarena cherry with a hint of cardamom. Lots of stuffing on the palate and heaps of chewy tannins that have the last word. 2025 – 2029

The 2023 Chianti Classico Bastioni dei Collazzi is a joy. Bold, punchy and super-expressive, the 2023 offers tons of immediacy and sheer allure. Succulent dark cherry and plum fruit open first, followed by hints of cedar and new leather that add complexity. The aromatic, floral close is quite attractive. 2025 – 2031

The 2023 Chianti Classico from Bastioni dei Collazzi is composed from a cépages of eighty percent Sangiovese, eighteen percent Merlot and two percent Malvasia Nera, with the vines more than twenty-five years of age. The wine is raised in a combination if barriques and botti, with the 2023 vintage coming in listed at fourteen percent octane. The wine offers up a deep, black fruity bouquet of cassis, dark berries, coffee grounds, a fine base of soil, cigar smoke and a nice touch of oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused and shows off fine depth of fruit at the core, with good focus and balance, firm, chewy tannins and a long, nascently complex and promising finish. This is a bit too tannic for immediate drinking, but should soften up nicely with a few years in the cellar and will start to drink quite well from that point forwards. It has the depth and balance to age gracefully for many years. 2028 – 2050

Impressive purity of fruit featuring fresh cherries and raspberries, complemented by rose hips, red spices, lavender and crushed stones. Bright and lively with medium body, firm yet lightly tight tannins and juicy acidity. The finish reveals a savory mineral note. Drink or hold.
