Libertà Toscana IGT – 2020

Villa Collazzi is one of the most impressive estates in all of Tuscany. This architectural landmark was originally designed by Michelangelo in 1560 for his friend, Agostino Dini. It offers commanding views of the surrounding countryside. I Collazzi is a property of the Marchi brothers, Carlo and Bona. During the last decade the Marchi brothers invested heavily in the development of Collazzi’s farming business, renewing the vineyards and restructuring the cellar, with the goal of producing excellent wines. Collazzi produces grapes from this esteemed estate only; a super-Tuscan blend called Collazzi, Chianti Classico named Bastioni, and a select few additional bottlings.

The Wine

Vineyard Profile

Libertà is made with grapes from the Collazzi estate. This wine expresses great balance between the soft tannins of Merlot, the aromatic complexity of Cabernet Franc and elegant spiciness of Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine owes its name to a donation that the City of Florence made to eight local families, among which the former owners of Collazzi, who had valiantly fought for the city’s freedom.

Winemaker's Notes

Deep, rich red. Balsamic aromas arise from the Merlot. In the mouth, the wine is enveloping with soft tannins, leaving the palate in exemplary balance. Complex and long without being impetuous.

93 Points

A creamy and polished red with currants and berries with some crushed stone. Medium body. Fine tannins and a crisp finish. Merlot, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon. A couple of years of bottle age will put this just right, but already delicious. Try after 2025., July, 2023

91 Points

The 2020 Libertà Toscano Rosso from Collazzi is crafted from a cépages of fifty percent merlot, thirty-five percent cabernet franc and fifteen percent cabernet sauvignon. The wine is fermented and undergoes malolactic in tank and is then aged in barriques for one year prior to bottling. The 2020 version comes in at fourteen percent octane and offers up a deep and youthfully complex nose of cassis, black cherries, cigar wrapper, a nice touch of fresh oregano, a fine base of soil, bonfire and a gentle touch of oak. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied and quite elegant in profile, with a fine core of fruit, good soil undertow, fine grained tannins and lovely balance on the long and complex finish. This is really a lovely bottle; give it five or six years in the cellar to properly start to soften up its backend tannins. It is a great value. 2028 – 2045
