Gruner Veltliner Alte Reben Reserve – 2021

Region: Austria - Weinviertel

Ebner-Ebenauer

Deep in a four hundred year old cellar, a quiet, studious man weighs careful decisions to create exquisite wines from each of the special parcels in the Weinviertel. He asks his accomplished, exuberant wife to join him in crafting the perfect blends that reflect their passionate partnership.

Once upon a time…this is how fairy tales usually begin. But sometimes real life is a fairy tale, and that is the case for Marion and Manfred Ebner-Ebenauer. While the Ebner-Ebenauer label was born in 2007, when the two winemakers decided to share their lives, the history of winemaking in Manfred’s family stretches back fourteen generations. Today Ebner-Ebenauer is a mixture of old and new. The 400 year old cellar and modern style of the careful winery renovation. Traditional winemaking, gravity fed, gentle pressing. Using new methods when appropriate. “Respect the traditions but change if not useful.”

The Wine

Vineyard Profile

Single vineyard Steinberg/von den Leussen near Poysdorf. “Von den Luessen” comes from Middle High German. In the Middle Ages, land was rendered arable by community effort, divided into parcels, then assigned to individuals by means of drawing lots, “Losen.”

  • Soil: Loess and gravel (sediments of the primordial Danube)
  • Vines Planted: early 1960s
  • Low yield
Harvest Notes
  • Hand harvested at end October in high Auslese ripeness
  • Strict berry selection in vineyard, picked into 20kg bins
  • Settled briefly, then fermented using only indigenous yeast in used oak casks without temperature control
  • Bottled in May
Winemaker's Notes

An encompassing, complex nose of ripe apples, yellow fruit, melon with a touch of fresh herbs and grapefruit. Full bodied and assertive palate with a sweet fruit center, rich and round with a whisper of tobacco. Fresh acidity carries the mouthfilling finish.

A medium-bodied, fresh and focused white with notes of biscuits, lemons, blanched almonds and acacia. Excellent balance, with a mineral streak, and a long finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink now. Screw cap.

There is a flinty note that mixes with white raspberry upfront, then the fruit becomes a bit more subtle, and savory minerality takes over together with hints of elderflower and chamomile. Beautifully integrated acidity serves as the backbone but also gives an uplifting impression overall.

Sourced from the Ried Steinberg and 70-year-old vines on gravel and sand/loess, the 2021 Grüner Veltliner Alte Reben was vinified in 500- and 228-liter oak barrels (70%) and in stainless steel tank (30%). It offers a pure and intense, deep and salty-mineral bouquet with hazelnut and fresh mocha aromas. On the palate, this is a full-bodied yet refined and creamy-textured Veltliner with ripe and elegant acidity, lingering salinity and mineral grip and tension. A gorgeous wine. 13.1% stated alcohol. Screw cap. 2024 – 2038

Shy Manfred Ebenauer and the charming marketing whizz Marion Ebner form an ideal partnership at this organic estate. This single-vineyard wine is sourced from 60-year-old vines, fermented with natural yeasts, and aged in older barrels. The nose is rich and weighty with considerable power. The attack is fresh and taut, spicy and intense, and the wine also shows admirable purity of fruit and tangy acidity. 2022 – 2030
