Ebner-Ebenauer

Gruner Veltliner Ried Hermanschachern – 2021

Region: Austria - Weinviertel

Ebner-Ebenauer

Deep in a four hundred year old cellar, a quiet, studious man weighs careful decisions to create exquisite wines from each of the special parcels in the Weinviertel. He asks his accomplished, exuberant wife to join him in crafting the perfect blends that reflect their passionate partnership.

Once upon a time…this is how fairy tales usually begin. But sometimes real life is a fairy tale, and that is the case for Marion and Manfred Ebner-Ebenauer. While the Ebner-Ebenauer label was born in 2007, when the two winemakers decided to share their lives, the history of winemaking in Manfred’s family stretches back fourteen generations. Today Ebner-Ebenauer is a mixture of old and new. The 400 year old cellar and modern style of the careful winery renovation. Traditional winemaking, gravity fed, gentle pressing. Using new methods when appropriate. “Respect the traditions but change if not useful.”

Winemaker's Notes

Sophisticated nuances of spices, ripe apples and tropical fruit on the nose. A powerful texture on the palate with mineral salts, luscious apple fruit and structure. The wine is commanding, full bodied yet soft and luxurious.  Elegant, mouthwatering acidity and fruit notes create dynamic tension on the lingering finish.

Give this a bit of time to open up and this Burgundy-like version of Grüner Veltliner will reward you. It features a round profile, with nice verve to the notes of peach and apricot (which are accented by wax, hazelnut and vanilla spice). It is complex and long, with a seductive aftertaste. Drink now through 2031.

From 40+-year-old vines on shale limestone soils in a south-facing vineyard and vinified in stainless steel, the 2021 Ried Hermannschachern Grüner Veltliner opens with an intense and refreshing mineral and limestone-driven bouquet of white fruits and sur lie notes. Aged on the lees until April and bottled in late spring of this year, this is a round, vivacious and elegant Veltliner with playful acidity and fine phenolic grip on the stimulating and saline finish. This is a supple Veltliner with an aromatic, juicy and finely tannic finish. 12.5% stated alcohol. Screw cap. 2022 – 2036

Tingly and zingy, this fragrant Gruner has notes of white pepper, nectarine, and grapefruit peel. Winemaker Manfred Ebner-Ebenauer’s family has been growing vines for 14 generations, and the family’s 400-year-old cellar in Poysdorf is still the souce for all of their wines.
