Ebner-Ebenauer
Deep in a four hundred year old cellar, a quiet, studious man weighs careful decisions to create exquisite wines from each of the special parcels in the Weinviertel. He asks his accomplished, exuberant wife to join him in crafting the perfect blends that reflect their passionate partnership.
Once upon a time…this is how fairy tales usually begin. But sometimes real life is a fairy tale, and that is the case for Marion and Manfred Ebner-Ebenauer. While the Ebner-Ebenauer label was born in 2007, when the two winemakers decided to share their lives, the history of winemaking in Manfred’s family stretches back fourteen generations. Today Ebner-Ebenauer is a mixture of old and new. The 400 year old cellar and modern style of the careful winery renovation. Traditional winemaking, gravity fed, gentle pressing. Using new methods when appropriate. “Respect the traditions but change if not useful.”
Reviews
The 2023 Grüner Veltliner Hermanschachern was grown on loess with limestone from an ancient coral reef, made in stainless steel. The nose immediately booms with pepper, crushed chervil and arugula. The palate is smooth, brims with salty yeastiness and vivid peppery savor. Green pear recedes into the background on this wine which is all about spicy, yeasty depth. Fine freshness lengthens the finish. (Bone-dry) 2028 – 2050
Marion Ebner-Ebenauer said that 2023 in her part of the northern Weinvertel saw sufficient water and lots of sunshine. The complete lack of any water stress was a particular boon for thirsty Grüner, as she cannot irrigate. The main aim at harvest, she said, “was to preserve acidity.” To this end, she picked white grapes very early in the morning and cooled them before pressing. She added that many were whole-bunch-pressed while some parcels were fermented on skins to achieve texture. She termed 2023 “not a hot but a warm year, where the harvest had to wait for cooler nights.” Picking started in early September and finished on 10 October. The wines are both savory and juicy, alive with verve and pepper.
Full screwcapped bottle just 1,162 g. 40-year-old vines from a single vineyard wine grown on soils with high lime content. Natural fermentation and lees ageing. Certified biodynamic.
Rich, broad, ample nose with a lightly chalky texture on the finish and just a hint of salinity. Lots of pleasure and promise! 2025 – 2032
The 2023 Ried Hermannschachern Grüner Veltliner opens with an intense, refined and elegant bouquet that intermingles saline and lemony Muschelkalk notes with ripe and concentrated but very elegant seed fruit aromas. Full-bodied, rich and generous on the palate, this is an elegant, quite hedonistic and textured Veltliner with fine, almost smooth acidity and delicate, stimulating salinity toward the long and aromatic finish. This complex and mineral wine is elegant and generous at the same time and a noble white from the Weinviertel to be enjoyed preferably with food. 12.5% stated alcohol. Screw-cap closure. 2025 – 2040
Gooseberries, grapefruit and melon rind on the nose, followed by a medium-bodied, juicy and fresh palate. Drink now. Screw cap.
A zesty, succulent white, with an appealing mix of pretty meadow blossoms, aloe and yellow apple set against cooling riverstone minerality, which brings structure and a chiseled feel to the finish. Warm spice and jasmine details add complexity. Drink now through 2030.
