Huguet de Can Feixes

Can Feixes Negre Tradició – 2015

Region: Spain - Cataluña

Huguet de Can Feixes

The historic Can Feixes Estate is situated on gravely slopes nestled over 1400 feet above sea level in an incomparable setting on the slopes of the famous Montserrat pinnacle, which forms Penedès northern boundary in the Upper Penedès wine region of Barcelona. Can Feixes forms an ecological environment where different crops and varied vegetation interact in perfect symbiosis between the cultivated and wildlands, reflecting the best expression of biodiversity in agriculture. For the Huguet family, respect and protection of the environment are considered integral elements of quality wines.

These are the farthest Penedès vineyards from the Mediterranean with, at times, extreme continental temperature variation. The drier climate is conducive to grape health. The altitude and mountain terrain constitute the tiny viticultural home of the Parellada variety, locally known as Montonec (“grape of the mountain”). The soil is chalk, clay and quite rocky with a capacity to retain water. The combination of climate and soil result in lower yields and grapes of exceptional quality. Recognized as one of the region’s Corpinnat vineyards, Can Feixes retains only the most exceptional grapes, and subsequently the very best wines for production under the family label.

The Wine

Vineyard Profile

Estate vineyards in foothills of upper Pènedes region, Alt Pènedes, D.O. Pènedes, Cataluña.

  • Altitude: over 1400 feet

  • Vine Age: 60+ years
  • Vine Training Systems: Goblet & Cordon-Royat
Harvest Notes

2015 – a particularly cool year, with a cold, wet winter and spring necessitating much work in the vineyards. In the summer, below average temperatures and occasional rainfall led to a late harvest. September was dry and sunny, with a healthy contrast between the day and nightime temperatures, all favouring a slow, healthy and opt.

  • Hand harvested with careful berry selection
  • Second sorting at winery
  • Destemmed; free run juice from gentle pneumatic pressing
  • Fermentation in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks
  • Aged 12 months in 225 liter, used French oak barrels
  • Bottle aged minimum of 6 years in subterranean cellar
Winemaker's Notes

Negre Tradicio is our Reserva – carefully crafted from the estate’s varieties to express the fullness of Can Feixes. This Bordeaux-style blend is built for maturing in the bottle, hence the 2015’s release several years after bottling. The tannins are smooth with perfect structure and carry the full fruit characteristics through the long finish. Decant for the best experience.
