Nestled at the very top of the impressively steep, vine-clad hills of the Treiso zone of Barbaresco, the winery’s vineyards were planted as early as the 1960’s in the white marl, calcareous soil typical of this area. An impressive selection of cru Barbaresci is punctuated by the spectacular Vigna Boito  located at the peak of the Rizzi cru. The estate is managed entirely by the Dellapiana family with son Enrico as winemaker and viticulturist. Rizzi Winery participates in “The Green Experience” project which mandates guidelines for environmentally sustainable production.

Vigna Boito is located on the upper part, a “saddle,” of the Rizzi Cru, in soils that are geologically younger than the surrounding areas: more clayey and deeper.

Harvest Notes
  • Hand harvested into small crates October 1-10

  • Bottle aged until at least 50 months from 1st of November following harvest
Winemaker's Notes

Classic and more muscular Barbaresco with long aging potential. Ripe plum, violet, leather and licorice aromas flow through to the palate. Enrico Dellapiana uses “both hands” to create Riserva Boito: one to make the wine, the other to paint the original label for each vintage.

An aromatic nose with wild berries, strawberries, flowers, sweet spices, wet stones and chocolate cherries. It’s medium-bodied with finely grained tannins and bright acidity. Transparent with a pure core of juicy fruit at the center, with clarity and vitality throughout. Precise and harmonious with a succulent finish. Drink or hold.

The top-shelf wine from Rizzi is the 2018 Barbaresco Rizzi Riserva Vigna Boito with fruit from the southeast-facing summit of the Rizzi cru. This wine shows ripeness and an open-knit approach that is followed by a powerful 15% alcohol content. That’s a lot for the Nebbiolo grape to absorb. This wine ends with candied aromas, raspberry praline macaron and lilac. There is some bitter almond on the close. I suggest a near or medium-term drinking window. 2024 – 2035

Shows some complex notes of macerated flowers and rich, cherry jelly fruit. The attack is soft and the frame quite light with moderate acidity sustained by quite rustic tannins. Vigna Boito lies at the top of Rizzi MGA. The wine is aged in Slavonian oak for around 20 months.

The “Vigna Boito” Riserva from Enrico Dellapiana is crafted from an upper section of the Cru vineyard of Rizzi, where the soils have more clay and less chalk than in the lower portions of the Cru. The Vigna Boito is aged solely in botti for twenty months prior to bottling and is then given bottle aging in the Rizzi cellars to allow at least four years of aging prior to release. The 2018 Vigna Boito is the new release of this lovely Riserva Barbaresco. It delivers a deep, complex and very refined bouquet of red and black cherries, licorice, a touch of road tar, woodsmoke, spiced meats, fresh oregano, curry, cedar and the first hints of the autumnal shadings of soil that will come with bottle age. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and loaded with ripe fruit at the core, with excellent soil undertow and grip, ripe, firm tannins, excellent focus and balance and a long, pure and fairly powerful finish. This wine landed at a full fifteen percent octane in the hot summer of 2018 (though “cool” examples of Barbaresco are routinely 14.5 percent alcohol these days, so it is not a dramatic uptick in ripeness), but shows no signs whatsoever of heat on the backend. It is just a bit more powerful than most vintages as a result of the hot summer of 2018. Fine juice. 2037 – 2085
