For over a century, four generations of the Sassetti family have farmed and made wine in Montalcino. Livio worked the historic property through the late 1970s, then purchased the 16-hectare (39.53 acres) Podere Pertimali vineyard. The now–famous Podere is in the Montosoli area, north of Montalcino, an area recognized for the cultivation of the Sangiovese grape.
In 1967, Livio was among the founders of the Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino, which was the same year the DOC(G) system was written into law. In 1968 he built a terracotta wall in his cellar to preserve the old vintages of the wines produced by the family. Today, that collection consists of almost 1,000 bottles, with vintages dating back to 1915. Dedicated to the land, Livio has over time rehabilitated and expanded the vineyards, preserving the genetic heritage of the old vines and preserving the primigenial characteristics.
In 1999, the Sassetti family acquired La Querciolina a beautiful property located in the Maremma within the Montecucco DOC. They also work with a small property in Colle Argento located in the Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG region.
Today, the estates are managed by Lorenzo Sassetti, Livio’s son, fourth generation family member and acclaimed winemaker. Together with his wife Sabina they passionately uphold the family name and reputation. Lorenzo’s wines have deep roots in their respective terroirs. The wines are invigorating, aromatic, powerful styles that dance on the palate. Sassetti Pertimali Brunello di Montalcino is a collector’s wine. A true benchmark.

Really pretty, sweet berries, cherries and fresh flowers on the nose. Orange peel, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with very fine tannins that are polished and attractive and melt into the wine. Such purity and finesse. Drink or hold.
The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva struts its old-school stylings with a beguiling display of musky cherry and strawberry offset by damp earth tones, hints of cedar and mint. It’s unbelievably soft and silky in texture, ushering in ripe red berry fruits laced in saline-minerals and savory spice, with building inner florals toward the close. Formidable structure awaits on the finish, yet the 2015 Riserva manages to maintain freshness, coming across as both structured for the long haul but also with enough primary appeal to warrant checking in on today. It’s gorgeous. Tasted over the course of two days with consistent results. 2024 – 2034
Blood and iron mark the aromas of this powerful red, with ripe flavors of plum, black cherry and fruitcake. Very long, fresh and balanced, with the dense, dusty tannins softening and integrating with a few hours aeration. Best from 2025 through 2047.
Earthy and savory, this has rather funky aromas including new leather, truffle, violet and game. The aromas carry over to the full-bodied, succulent palate along with fleshy blackberry, baked plum and licorice. Enveloping, fine-grained tannins provide plenty of support. It has a rustic allure. Drink 2023–2030.
The Riserva bottling of Brunello from Lorenzo Sassetti spends a fourth year aging in the Slavonian oak botti prior to bottling. The 2015 Pertimali Riserva tips the scales at 14.5 percent alcohol in this warm summer and delivers a beautifully refined aromatic constellation of red and black cherries, spit-roasted venison, coffee bean, campfire, a complex base of soil tones, rosemary, oregano, brown spices and cedary oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, ripe and complex, with a superb core of fruit, excellent soil signature, good acids, buried tannins and excellent length and grip on the long and classy finish. This is more black fruity in personality than the 2016 normale, but every bit as complex and well-balanced. 2030 – 2075+
