Cabernet Sauvignon Brothers Vineyard – 2014

Since 1955, the Snowdens have farmed their vineyard high above the Napa Valley. In addition to the stunning views of St. Helena, Rutherford and the San Francisco Bay, the estate offers four separate sites producing remarkably complex and individualistic wines. Winemaking duties are in the capable hands of Diana Snowden Seysses. The winery produces Bordeaux blends from their estate vineyards and a small amount of Sauvignon Blanc from a small parcel they call the Lost Vineyard.

The Wine

Vineyard Profile
  • Our vineyard-designated “first” wine is made from Cabernet Sauvignon grown on what has proved to be the most favored terroir at the Snowden ranch.
  • The Brothers Vineyard is our largest and best-situated vineyard, at 850 feet of elevation, perched at the top of our hill above Rutherford and St. Helena, with Conn Valley dropping dramatically off the backside.
  • Our second vintage since returning to production after replanting, the 2014 Brothers Vineyard is showing a distinctive and powerful flavor profile of classic, California-grown Cabernet Sauvignon, highlighted by the nuances that can only come from a unique site and the variations in each new vintage.
Harvest Notes
  • Harvested September 11, 2014 (Cabernet Sauvignon) and September 20, 2014 (Petit Verdot).
  • Winemaker’s remarks on the 2014 growing season:  “Like 2013, the 2014 gave us a dry, warm growing year that led to an early vintage – the continuation of a weather pattern that began after the 2011 vintage and persists into the current 2016 season.  2014 stood apart for its even temperatures, with no heat waves or sunburned fruit.  We also harvested a larger crop than in the 2013 and 2015 vintages before and after.  The finished alcohols are slightly lower than those other vintages and the acidity slightly more pronounced.  The 2014 reds are savory and bright, yet delightfully light-footed and immediately accessible.”
Winemaker's Notes

Winemaker’s remarks on the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon “Brothers Vineyard”:  “In my experience, one sign of a great wine is its seemingly magical tendency to vanish. One minute the cork is pulled, the next minute the last drops are being emptied into a glass. My husband and I had this exact experience while enjoying the Brothers 2014 with buffalo steak.  The 2014 Brothers is utterly and gloriously drinkable! This is a classic Cabernet Sauvignon, with aromas of crème de cassis, cured meats, lavender, huckleberry jelly and blueberries. It is both sweet and savory with structured, focused length. Our family has worked so hard, with the utmost integrity to produce the wine in this bottle. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

93 Points

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Brothers Vineyard is 89% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Petit Verdot. This is a beauty and clearly the star of the red wine portfolio. Dense purple, with loads of cassis, blackberry, licorice and graphite, the wine hits the palate with considerable authority, impressive purity and only a hint of new oak (only 45% new barriques were utilized ). The finish was long, full-bodied and silky. This can be drunk now, or cellared for 20-25 years.

95 Points

Snowden’s Cabernet Sauvignon The Brothers has all the balance and harmony that defines the wines here in this vintage.  Vivid, nuanced and deeply expressive, the 2014 presents a beguiling interplay of expressive aromatics and rich fruit, with beams of supporting tannin that shape the wine.  Hints of tobacco and savory herbs add to the wine’s considerable personality.
