Depending on the soil and microclimate, Pinot Gris varies from a simple everyday wine all the way up to absolute top growths. The warm, sun-exposed vineyards of the Anger sites, with their loamy limestone gravel soils, are a textbook example. The Anger Alto Adige Pinot Grigio has a noble structure, nice balance and fine acidity – making it an absolute pleasure to drink.

Winemaker's Notes

Pale yellow color with a slightly green shimmer. Notes of ripe pear and honeydew melon on the nose. A creamy taste and mouthfeel. This strong white goes well with fish and fish soup, guinea fowl breast or veal fillet.

The level of consistent quality turned out by the St. Michael-Eppan Winery is remarkable, especially considering that they produce 2.5 million bottles a year on average, which are sourced from 350 hectares that are overseen by 355 member-growers. The winemaking team is made up of Anton Zublasing, Günther Neumair and Master Winemaker Hans Terzer. While the house prides itself mainly on their production of white varieties throughout the Sanct Valentin range, they have also had success with Pinot Noir. While you can expect an influence of barrique throughout their higher end wines, it’s impossible to deny their quality and balance. While this combination isn’t often expected from an Alto Adige producer, it fits right in with many of the world’s major and highly successful winemaking regions.

The 2019 Pinot Grigio Anger from St. Michael-Eppan balances the richness of partial oak aging (30%) with varietal purity and a gorgeous inner sweetness to create a truly seductive expression. Yellow flowers, ripe green melon and apple take center stage, with a hint of stone dust and brown spice in the background. It’s silky in texture, soothing all that it touches in ripe orchard fruits backed by zesty, mouthwatering acids. Lasting savory herbal tones and sour citrus form up the long and refreshing finale.

The opposite of anger is joy, and that’s exactly what I received from the first sip of the nicely priced San Michele Appiano 2019 Alto Adige Pinot Grigio Anger. This wine is named after Anger, a hot and sunny subzone in the town of San Michele, where the fruit for this wine is sourced. A fresh and happily informal white, it offers aromas of citrus, grapefruit, blanched almond and wild sage. Pretty mineral notes appear on the close with sweet citrus. This bright wine from Anger carries extra happiness and creaminess on its lean-bodied frame. 2020 – 2024
