Tiberio
The story of Azienda Agricola Tiberio rings more like a new world tale than one from the old world of the ancient lands beneath the Majella and Gran Sasso mountains in Abruzzo. At 1150 feet/350 meters, twenty three miles inland from the seaside city of Pescara near the hillside town of Cugnoli, Riccardo Tiberio found an old plot of Trebbiano Abruzzese vines roughly 50 years old so impressive that he decided to change his and his family’s destiny.
Over a decade ago, Cristiana and Antonio, daughter and son of Riccardo, took over reins of Tiberio. Cristiana, a chemistry specialist who also teaches college sommelier and enology classes, handles winemaking and is the global brand ambassador. Antonio leads grapegrowing and viticulture. The dynamic team have established Tiberio, and Abruzzo, in the forefront of leading-edge wine making and renown in this central part of Italy. Today, Tiberio farms 74 acres/30 hectares of vines.

Beautiful pink-fuchsia colour. Very intense aromas and flavors of flowers and red fruit, this is at once rich and dense, and is one of the better Cerausolo wines made by Tiberio of late (save perhaps for the marvelous 2022). Fleshy, tactile and perfumed, the notes of strawberry, red cherry, and vanilla flowers jump from the glass and linger impressively. 2025 – 2028
The 2024 Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo is impossible to ignore. It has a vivid, perfumed bouquet of black cherry and wild blueberry, complemented by sweet lavender tones and hints of spice. This possesses amazing complexity and inner perfume. Violet florals arc across the palate as the Cerasuolo finishes long and slightly tart. In 2024, Cristiana Tiberio used all of her Montepulciano fruit to bolster the Cerasuolo. This is not to be missed. 2025 – 2030
Pale ruby. A fresh raspberry nose with minerally chalk notes and much more focused and firm than practically any rosato. Fresh raspberry and cherry fruit with cool acidity. A bit like a mountain red. Think refrigerated reds. 2025 – 2028
Cristiana Tiberio’s 2024 Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo is a simply beautiful wine. It is a dark Rosé in color and beautifully aromatic, with the bouquet wafting from the glass in a blend of blood orange, pomegranate, rhubarb, chalky soil tones, orange peel and a topnote of dried rose petals. On the palate the wine is deep, pure, bright and full, with a lovely core of fruit, excellent soil signature and grip, tangy acids, lovely focus and balance and just a wisp of tannin perking up the long and complex finish. As I have said before, this is like a mix of a lighter red wine and a Rosé in style. It is absolutely beautiful wine in 2024. 2025 – 2040
