Fonte Canale Trebbiano d’Abruzzo – 2020

Region: Italy - Abruzzo

Tiberio

The story of Azienda Agricola Tiberio rings more like a new world tale than one from the old world of the ancient lands beneath the Majella and Gran Sasso mountains in Abruzzo. At 1150 feet/350 meters, twenty three miles inland from the seaside city of Pescara near the hillside town of Cugnoli, Riccardo Tiberio found an old plot of Trebbiano Abruzzese vines roughly 50 years old so impressive that he decided to change his and his family’s destiny.

Over a decade ago, Cristiana and Antonio, daughter and son of Riccardo, took over reins of Tiberio. Cristiana, a chemistry specialist who also teaches college sommelier and enology classes, handles winemaking and is the global brand ambassador. Antonio leads grapegrowing and viticulture. The dynamic team have established Tiberio, and Abruzzo, in the forefront of leading-edge wine making and renown in this central part of Italy. Today, Tiberio farms 74 acres/30 hectares of vines.

Pale yellow with gold-green highlights. Youthfully reticent but very pure and penetrating aromas of lime peel, lemon, almond flower and minerals. Deceptively open on entry in the manner of a great Chablis from Les Clos, with a suave set of citrus oil-accented flavours of orchard fruit and guava. Then much more like a Chablis from Blanchots on its lifted, fine-grained and extremely long mineral finish. citrus oil. A powerful, broad wine yet almost magically weightless as is absolutely typical of Fonte Canale, one of Italy’s best 10-15 white wines in practically every vintage. The 2020 is good to drink now but will be so much better five years from now. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. 2027 – 2035

The magic of Trebbiano d’Abruzzo is apparent in the 2020 Fonte Canale. It entices the senses with a bouquet that mixes rich raw almond and mineral tones with refreshing crushed apple and mint hints to balance. This is elegant, soft and enveloping, with ripe orchard fruits complicated by zesty lemony citrus as a salty staining of minerals cakes the palate with youthful concentration. The perfumed finale shows the prestige of these old vines, tapering off potent and tense with a lasting concentration and liquid stone sensation that keeps me looking back to the glass for more. 2025 – 2034
