Tiberio
The story of Azienda Agricola Tiberio rings more like a new world tale than one from the old world of the ancient lands beneath the Majella and Gran Sasso mountains in Abruzzo. At 1150 feet/350 meters, twenty three miles inland from the seaside city of Pescara near the hillside town of Cugnoli, Riccardo Tiberio found an old plot of Trebbiano Abruzzese vines roughly 50 years old so impressive that he decided to change his and his family’s destiny.
Over a decade ago, Cristiana and Antonio, daughter and son of Riccardo, took over reins of Tiberio. Cristiana, a chemistry specialist who also teaches college sommelier and enology classes, handles winemaking and is the global brand ambassador. Antonio leads grapegrowing and viticulture. The dynamic team have established Tiberio, and Abruzzo, in the forefront of leading-edge wine making and renown in this central part of Italy. Today, Tiberio farms 74 acres/30 hectares of vines.
Reviews
Pale straw colour. Germanic aromas of peach, pineapple, papaya, ginger and lemon verbena. Very fresh and moderately concentrated in the mouth, with a strong fruit character and lovely inner-palate perfume. Closes silky with a classically dry finish and a whiplash of orchard fruit. Technically high acidity really extends the surprisingly tropical flavours on the back. Though somewhat atypically fat and oily, this is really impressive and remarkably fun to drink. 2025 – 2027
Musky peach and apricot mix with crushed rocks and hints of lemon zest as the 2024 Trebbiano d’Abruzzo comes to life in the glass. This mixes salty mineral tones with tart orchard fruits over a wave of soothingly soft textures. The 2024 is citric and intense, with a saline character that lingers long. 2025 – 2030
Deep golden straw yellow. Really savoury and saline and a little meaty on the nose with subdued notes of chamomile. Seriously dry and slow to develop on the palate. It’s like a canvas revealing the mineral character rather than the fruit of the place of origin. Long and complex yet in a very subdued way. Will be fascinating to see how this ages. 2025 – 2028
The 2024 Trebbiano d’Abruzzo from Antonio and Cristiana Tiberio is crafted primarily on the very old vines that their father discovered in 2000 and purchased to serve as the cornerstone of his family winery. These vines are now seventy years of age, with a portion of the blend here made from younger selection massale vines planted by Antonio in 2011. The wine is fermented and raised in stainless steel tanks and does not go through malolactic. It offers up a deep, pure and elegant bouquet of nectarine, fresh lime, passion fruit, fruit blossoms, limestone minerality, hints of menthol and a topnote of lemongrass. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, vibrant, complex and impeccably balanced, with lovely depth of old vine fruit at the core, excellent mineral undertow, zesty acids and lovely focus on the long, seamlessly balanced finish. This is drinking beautifully out of the blocks and will also age long and gracefully. 2025 – 2040+
Minerally on the nose, with petrol and flint accents joining crushed pine and white pepper notes. This aromatic overtone laces the palate’s flavors of grainy pear, dried white cherry, raw almond and licorice root, while a spine of vivid acidity provides fine definition. Salty finish. Drink now through 2034.
